UNLV RB Darran Williams in stable condition after suffering heart attack
UNLV running back Darran Williams is in stable condition after suffering a heart attack during a workout on Tuesday morning.
According to The Oklahoman, Williams’ father shared the news of his son’s hospitalization on Facebook and said doctors would induce Darran into a coma for 72 hours to determine the cause of the heart attack.
UNLV released a statement saying that a student-athlete “had a medical episode” while warming up for a team workout, but did not identify Williams by name.
“He is being treated by doctors at a local hospital with his family at his side. The thoughts and prayers of the entire UNLV community are with him and his family,” the statement said, per the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Williams played in five games for the Rebels in 2019, gaining 79 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. The Oklahoma City native also caught two passes for 11 yards.
Williams, who turned 22 on Monday, transferred to UNLV after two seasons at Northwestern Oklahoma A&M College. In 2018, Williams rushed for 1,427 yards and 15 touchdowns, earning JUCO All-American honors. He was also the offensive MVP of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference that season.
UNLV is entering its first season with Marcus Arroyo as head coach. Arroyo, 39, was hired in December after three seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oregon.
