Unique 2 Colorado: Steamboat Springs company promotes sustainability through self-care

DENVER (KDVR) — A company that started in a Steamboat Springs woman’s kitchen in 2021 has grown into a larger line of plant-powered, plastic-free hair and body products.

Sarah Spliethoff founded Sunniemade, a company that creates 100% plastic-free hair and body cleansing bars. She stopped by Daybreak on Thursday to talk about the importance of sustainability.

“I realized if we could switch to a solid product, we could eliminate the plastic waste. You can also have a cleaner product because we don’t have to add preservatives to it,” Spliethoff said. “I wanted to share the story and get people excited about making the sustainable swap, and it’s really more of an upgrade versus feeling like you’re making a sacrifice.”

Spliethoff said she and her husband made homemade bar soaps in their kitchen and then scaled up from there. The company’s products are now sold online, at retailers and at the Steamboat Springs farmer’s market every Saturday starting in June.

All Sunniemade packaging is also compostable and recyclable.

According to Spliethoff, each hair care bar replaces up to three plastic bottles, and each bar of soap replaces one plastic bottle.
