Kindle Paperwhite Kids Bundle

$104.99

amazon.com

Amazon sells a “Kindle Paperwhite Kids” bundle that’s currently priced at $104.99 for Prime Day — and while that’s technically $10 more expensive than the standard 11th Generation Kindle Paperwhite (16GB) reader, it’s worth spending extra for even if you’re not gifting it to a child — and here are four reasons why.

1. The Paperwhite Kids comes with a protective case

Since the Kids edition is identical to the 11th Generation Kindle Paperwhite, it’s completely waterproof and IPX8-rated. This means it can withstand submersion in up to 2 meters of water for 60 minutes, making it the ultimate companion for the pool, bathtub, or beach. Amazon even says that it can survive a dip in saltwater.

The Kindle Paperwhite still isn’t drop-proof, though, and this Amazon-exclusive kids’ bundle comes with a green or yellow protective cover that’s made to last and will keep its display scratch-free. It has magnets that close the cover securely and just like a book, it opens and closes to wake the e-reader or put it to sleep. Unsurprisingly, having the case makes the Kindle much more comfortable and natural to hold, too.

Amazon normally charges $34.99 for the official Paperwhite case, but with this Prime Day-exclusive bundle, it's included in the $105 price. It also includes a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. This service grants access to timeless kid-friendly classics like The Boxcar Children and popular series like Harry Potter.

2. You get longer and better warranty coverage

Another perk of opting for the Kindle Kids e-reader is Amazon covers the product with a 2-year warranty (versus the standard’s 1-year). Even better, Amazon backs the Paperwhite Kids bundle with its “worry-free guarantee,” which states“if it breaks, return it and we’ll replace it for free.”

Just like Hannah Montana says, “Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days,” so, why wouldn’t you want the improved warranty coverage for added peace of mind in the unlikely event you break it?

3. No ads and more storage space

In case you were unaware, most Kindles have something called “special offers,” which are unobtrusive ads that periodically appear on the screen when your Kindle is in sleep mode. If you find them bothersome, you can pay an extra $20 at purchase or remove the ads later by getting in touch with Amazon Customer Service and paying the fee.

If you decide to opt for the Kids Edition Paperwhite, though, Amazon says that it is automatically set up to enjoy an ad-free experience. This model also has twice the storage space (16GB) as the standard Paperwhite, which means you have even more room for eBooks and audiobooks.

4. It makes an excellent gift

I’ve personally gifted my significant other, both of my parents, and my sister Kindle e-readers. To make the gift even more personalized and special, I recommend opening it up and loading it with books that you know they will love or books that you love. Not only does it mean they can hop right in and get sucked into a good book, but they also don’t have to deal with the stress of buying books and charging the device, and it gives you both something to share and discuss.

It's worth a quick mention that when you do set the Kindle Paperwhite Kids up, you will have to create a parental control PIN and add an account for a “child” which you can later delete. I can assure you, though, the Kindle Kids Paperwhite does not have any sort of screen limits or parental controls that would hinder your ability to read or listen to audiobooks once you remove the child's account.

Wrap-Up

Even though Kids is in the name, the Amazon Kids Paperwhite is the best e-reader for people of all ages. It’s thin, lightweight, lasts for 10 weeks on a single charge, and despite costing around $100 less, it has the same resolution as the more expensive Kindle Oasis. It is completely waterproof (a feature the standard Kindle lacks) plus, this one comes with a better warranty, a protective case, it doesn’t have any ads, and it has more storage.

The regular price of the Kindle Paperwhite Kids bundle is $169.99. This Amazon Prime Day Kindle deal is $104.99. If you were to buy the standard 16GB 11th Generation Kindle Paperwhite and its protective case at face value and pay to remove the ads, you’d be charged $204.98, which equates to nearly 50% off for this limited-time sale.

Whether you're gifting the Kindle to yourself, a student, or an avid reader, your giftee will immediately appreciate the benefits and portability of a Kindle, without having to deal with strained eyes or the harmful effects of blue light from using a smartphone or tablet, and contrary to its form factor, it’s not a “screen time” product and serves as a beneficial reading tool for kids and adults.
