Unconscious Surfer Hospitalized After Rescue at Ocean Beach in San Francisco

An unconscious surfer was rescued by fellow surfers and brought to shore at Ocean Beach in San Francisco yesterday.

The surfer was an adult male who was “pulseless and not breathing” said Capt. Justin Schorr, a spokesperson for the SF Fire Department, according to SF Gate.

Early reports state that the San Francisco Fire Department rescue units were working to revive the surfer near Otega Avenue and Great Highway before taking him to the hospital.

The news broke via the fire department's media X, aka Twitter, page yesterday.

The fire department captioned the post above:

"SFFD beach and surf rescue units are working to revive a surfer pulled from the water on Ocean Beach near Great Highway and Ortega. Emergency vehicles are on Great Highway, use caution."

The fire department has not posted an update on its social media or on its media page.

According to SF Gate:

“The surfers who pulled him out started CPR right away, which gives him the best chance at survival,” he said. “I always tell people they should learn CPR with a friend because you’ll never know when a friend will need to use it on you.”

The man was rushed to UCSF Medical Center.

“We have no idea what the precipitating factor was that caused this, whether it was the conditions in the water or the patient,” Schorr said. “There’s no idea to know exactly what happened at this point.”

There were not any advisories or warnings regarding dangerous surf conditions from the National Weather Service on Thursday.

This is a developing story.
