Warning: Some mild spoilers for the Uncharted games ahead.
Behold: The trailer for Uncharted — starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Sophia Ali — just dropped.
As fans are already aware, the movie is set to be a prequel to the events of the iconic action-adventure video games.
Now, for full transparency, despite being a huge fan of the video games, I was a tad apprehensive going into this because of an interview Tom gave with GQ earlier this year where he said of his performance, "It was a mistake and is something that I will probably never do again.”
Moving on from that cheerful note, we now have the full trailer! We see Tom as the protagonist Nathan Drake, an adventure-loving explorer:
Next we have Mark as Victor Sullivan, aka Sully, Drake's friend and mentor figure:
We also see Sophia as Chloe, Drake's ally and love interest:
There are a couple of big differences from the game straight off the bat. For one, Nathan and Sully seem to meet while Nathan is bartending — unlike in the games, where they meet in Colombia during a high-stakes robbery and chase while Nathan is a teenager.
Plus, in this version, Chloe and Sully already seem to have an extensive prior relationship.
However, there is a lot of stuff that is straight out of the games. For one, the cargo plane sequence from Uncharted 3:
The final treasure ships from Uncharted 4:
And the heist scene from Uncharted 4:
In fact, a lot of the trailer seems to be referencing Uncharted 4 — from the cross to a part set in Scotland.
It's not entirely clear what kind of villain Antonio Banderas will be — but I'd bet that he'll be a Rafe-like antagonist.
If you're wondering about Nate's brother, Sam, then it's worth pointing out that there are references to him in the trailer — but it's not clear if he'll actually be in the movie or not.
As for my personal thoughts on the trailer...meh. It seems to lack a lot of the classic Uncharted flavor, but I'm also aware of the need to give this movie a shot to exist in its own right.
