Umm, Matthew McConaughey Almost Didn’t Star in ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’

It would be hard (and we mean very hard) to picture anyone else but Matthew McConaughey playing the dreamy executive Benjamin Barry in the beloved romantic comedy, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

While the film celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, the 53-year-old actor revealed that he almost didn’t take the part. What could have possibly changed his mind? A fortune teller, apparently.

Allow us to explain. The film star recently sat down with Vanity Fair and shared that he was undecided about taking the role. So, he turned to an unlikely source for help.

“I remember considering whether I was going to do it or not one night while on a walk down Sunset Boulevard when suddenly, this guy comes up out of nowhere to me—he was a fortune teller guru (and) goes, ‘Can I tell you your fortune real quick?’” he told the publication.

McConaughey added, “I was like, ‘Yeah, man. Sure.’ He immediately goes, ‘There’s a movie you’re considering right now. It’s a romantic comedy. You have to do this or it will be one of the biggest regrets of your life. It is going to be a blast, it is going to be an incredible experience and it is going to make a bunch of money.’”

Obviously, The Wolf of Wall Street alum ultimately took the role. “I remember thinking, ‘Did the studio hire this guy?’ I laughed at the thought, but I also remember taking a more serious consideration,” he continued. “I think I even accepted the offer the next day.”

As a special treat for old (and new fans) of the movie, McConaughey and his former co-star, Kate Hudson, recently reunited over Instagram Live to celebrate the anniversary of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. The two stars discussed the movie, shared memories from filming and so much more.
