'Umbrella Academy' Star Tom Hopper Is Obsessed With Arnold Schwarzenegger Movies

From Men's Health

  • Tom Hopper plays Luther Hargreeves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy

  • Before starring on the hit show, he starred in the seventh season of Game of Thrones.

  • Hopper is a big-time family man when not working.

Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy is now streaming on on Netflix, and just like in Season 1, Luther Hargreeves is one of the show's most interesting and important. Hell, it's part of his identity—he's called "#1" in the show—to be a leader, and to be important. He's also not entirely human, and his part-primate DNA helps fuel his super-strength. That'll help in Season 2, when he's part of a fighting ring for notorious real-life gangster Jack Ruby.

While you’ll have to watch the show to learn more about Luther's season two adventures (which, you guessed correctly, involve time travel), you might want to know more about Tom Hopper, the man behind #1. And you've almost definitely seen him pop up on your screen before.

This isn’t his first go-around with book-to-TV adaptations.

Hopper might be popular for his role as Luther in the show based on My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way’s comic book series, but this is actually familiar territory for the actor. TV goers might recognize him from roles in Merlin (Sir Percival), Black Sails (Billy Bones) and a show called Game of Thrones, where he portrayed Samwell's brother, Dickon Tarly in the seventh season.

Hopper is obsessed with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In a 2019 interview with Men’s Health, Hopper admitted his love for Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is one of his life inspirations. “I watched [Terminator 2: Judgment Day] when I was quite younger that I should’ve been on VHS over and over again,” he said. “I was obsessed with Arnie and was a huge influence in my film watching. I ended up loving everything else that he did.”

Friends inspired him to become an actor.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Hopper was candid about the show that inspired him to pursue acting—and it’s one people around the world know and love.

“I was 10 or 11-years-old when Friends started,” he said. “It was something my brother, mum and I would watch… it was hugely influential for me in deciding to become an actor, too. I really enjoy doing comedy, and a lot of my influences come from Friends.” Is there a particular character on the show he loved? Not to be surprised, but he particularly related to Ross and Joey.

He’s very vocal about his love for his family.

The Game of Thrones alum married wife Laura Higgins back in 2014, and the duo share two children—daughter Truly Rose and son Freddie. While he’s a proud family man all around, he’s particularly impressed by his son, who has autism. “My son has autism, and he amazes me every day,” he told People in a recent interview. “His brain just works in a different way.”

But let’s not forget Hopper’s daughter, who very much loves her father and adorably joined him and his wife in an at-home workout video he filmed with Men’s Health back in April. “She’s a Daddy’s girl and I love it,” he gushed to People about their father-daughter relationship. “She’s going to walk all over my wallet.”
