'The Umbrella Academy' Season Two Brings the Hargreeves Siblings to 1960s Dallas
The first season of Netflix's moody superhero drama, The Umbrella Academy, ended with a not-so-positive bang. After losing control of her powers, Vanya (Ellen Page) spurs the end of the world. And in the show's final moments, Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) uses his time-hopping powers to teleport the Hargreeves siblings out of the apocalypse. For fans of the comics from which the show is adapted, it was a substantial deviation from the source material: The Hargreeves do not save the world.
After the cliffhanger finale, showrunner Steve Blackman was reluctant to say where, exactly, the Hargreeves went. As he told The Hollywood Reporter:
The truth is, we don't know where they are. We don't know what happened to them. I wanted this to really be the best of cliffhangers, in that you're like "Wait, what? What happened?" It gives us a lot of openness and legroom to tell the best story we can next year. But yes, the apocalypse is not solved. They did not save the world, which is a slight alteration of the comic. To me, it was the right Netflix cliffhanger. You really want people to go into the off-season saying, "I gotta know what happened," and that will be revealed when — hopefully — you see season two.
Well, now, we finally know. In a new preview from Entertainment Weekly, photos show the family has ended up in 1960s Dallas. As EW explains:
While season 1 mostly followed the arc of the first volume, Apocalypse Suite, season 2 sends the team straight to the city whose name graces the second volume in the series: Dallas. Number Five's powers manipulate both space and time, so it's not just Dallas, but Dallas in the '60s. But as we know, Five's control of his powers has never been terribly well-refined, so the team gets split up in the process, with each arriving in Dallas at a slightly different point in time. Five shows up last and finds himself staring down the barrel of yet another apocalypse. So it once again falls to him to spend the season assembling the team in the hope of averting disaster.
Season Two brings back the full Hargreeves clan, including Page, Gallagher, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and Justin H. Min. It also welcomes a new swathe of names, including Marin Ireland, Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Tom Sinclair, Kris Holden-Ried, and Jason Brydenwait.
Seasons one and two are based on the first two comic series from writer Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá. The third series, The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion, was released in October of 2018, with the fourth due out sometime this year. As Way told THR, Netflix will have quite a bit of source material going forward:
There's eight graphic novels planned in total, and we're on the third series right now. Now that we've started up again, we're averaging about a year and a half per series for the turnaround. Steven knows what happens in all of those eight volumes; I wrote up this document for him and the writers, which explains what will happen through all of the graphic novels.
But, for this second installment, it should be no spoiler to point out that we all know what major American event happens in Dallas on November 22, 1963.
And in the first trailer, it seems the siblings have brought the apocalypse back in time with them. This time, it's all tied to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. They have 10 days to figure out how to solve it. Let's hope they do a little bit better this time.
The Umbrella Academy Season Two debuts on Netflix on July 31.
