What should you look for in the best cotton sheets?

Before shopping, it's important to consider different factors that only matter when it comes to cotton sheets.

• Thread count: Thread count is the number of threads (horizontal and vertical) per square inch. The higher the thread count, the softer the sheet is, and the better it'll wear or soften over time. You should generally look for cotton sheets with a thread count of 200 to 800, but the number doesn't mean it's high- or low-quality.

• Type of cotton: The types of cotton are Egyptian, pima/Supima, upland, flannel, and jersey.

Egyptian is super high-quality, luxurious, and long-lasting (but expensive), while pima/Supima is a close second in durability and softness, so it's less likely to pill than some of the other types. It's also a little lower in price than Egyptian. Upland is a bit lower quality and it's the most common form of cotton, so they're durable, but not as soft as the other ones.

Flannel cotton has been pre-shredded, which gives it a thicker feel, and makes it better for cold weather. Lastly, jersey feels like an old cotton t-shirt. The fabric is soft, but will pill over time. It's less durable, so they'll stretch out with more usage.

• Type of weave: The most common weave patterns for cotton sheets are percale and sateen. (But, there's more info on the differences between those two later.)

• Price: This number will differ based on the material's sourcing location, if the sheets and pillowcases are bought together, and the size of your bed. Egyptian is the most expensive type of cotton bed sheet, while pima/Supima is a little less so, and upland, flannel, and jersey cotton sheets are generally more affordable. Make sure the description of each type of cotton matches your needs, then choose accordingly based upon how much money you're ready to spend.

How should you care for/maintain cotton sheets?

It's pretty simple—you can just machine-wash them on a warm temperature setting once a week. Make sure to use a mild detergent, and no bleach.

Examine the washing instructions on your tag beforehand, but know that generally, you can either line-dry or tumble-dry them on low or medium heat. Hot water can damage the fibers and fade the color of the sheets. Afterwards, make sure to remove them from the dryer right away so they don't wrinkle. If they're still damp, hang them up to dry.

Try to wash them alone or with other sheets, since putting them in a load with other items might damage them. They soften with more washes, and generally, cotton sheets will last two to three years.

If you stain cotton sheets, hydrogen peroxide can do the trick to remove it. Just put some on the stain and wait for about 30 minutes, then dab it with a paper towel.

What’s the difference between sateen versus percale cotton?

Sateen sheets are kind of similar to satin, as satin's weave pattern is also used to make the former. Instead of using filament fibers, yarn is used. They're also wrinkle-resistant and heavier than percale, so they're better for cold sleepers.

Percale, on the other hand, have a plain weave (one yarn over, one yarn under). This type of sheet gets softer with every wash, but they aren't wrinkle-resistant, and they're more durable than sateen sheets. Percale is super breathable and better for hot sleepers.
