Ultra rare pineapple costs $400

(WJW) – It’s being billed as high-end, luxury fruit.
This week, Rubyglow pineapples were officially introduced to the U.S. market.

Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. announced the pineapple’s debut in January of 2024, but it was only available in Japan and even had a global waitlist.
According to the company, only about 5,000 will be available around the world this year.
The pineapple has a red shell and bright yellow flesh. It’s been under development for 15 years and is grown on a farm in Costa Rica.
The Rubyglow pineapple is a cross between a traditional pineapple and a Morada variety. According to the company, it takes two years to grow each pineapple.
Because they’re so rare, there is also a limited seed supply. The time-consuming cycle is what is behind that steep price.
“From the intricate growing process to the distinct color, sweet taste and elegant packaging – every detail of the Rubyglow pineapple is meticulously crafted to deliver a premium experience,” said Melissa Mackay, Fresh Del Monte’s vice president of marketing in North America. “This exquisite tropical fruit is another gem in crown, and we are thrilled to introduce this groundbreaking pineapple to North America.”
Rubyglow pineapples will be available nationwide through select regional grocers and online from specialty produce retailers.
In a press release, Fresh Del Monte notes that retailers will set the price.

Fresh Del Monte has created several new pineapples over the years.
Those include, according to the company:
Del Monte Gold® Extra Sweet Pineapples, which are twice as sweet as traditional varieties and feature a beautiful golden flesh, available in multiple sizes including the Grandissimo Gold® grand pineapple.
Honeyglow® pineapples, which are hand-harvested at peak sweetness and ripeness and includes regular sizes and smaller options such as the Mini Honeyglow® pineapple and Precious Honeyglow™ pineapple.
PINKGLOW®, Fresh Del Monte’s proprietary variety of bright pink pineapples
Del Monte Zero™ carbon neutral pineapples, which are certified by SCS Global Services.
