There’s a Good Chance ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Will End With Season 17

From Cosmopolitan

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in addition to The Bachelor ending in, like, a week, another one of your favorite ABC shows might be on the chopping block. After 17 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy—which has delivered all the medical drama your heart desires since 2005—there’s a good chance this season will be the last. I’ll give you a moment.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the future of Grey’s Anatomy is uncertain. Renewal talks have been ongoing for months, but there’s still no definite answer on whether season 18 is happening. As a result, showrunner Krista Vernoff is ensuring season 17’s finale makes sense as a series finale too…juuust in case.

“I’m planning a season and a finale that could function as either a season finale or a series finale,” Krista told the outlet. “I’m planning for both contingencies and it’s hard and it’s not ideal. It’s not where I wish we were.” Yikes.

“I’ve told them that I have to know before I’m making the finale what we’re making,” she added. “Because there are a couple of character threads that will change. I’ve got plans for both contingencies. Either there will be closure or I will build something in that allows me to have a bit of a cliff-hanger and a thread for next season.”

You love all the deets on Grey’s Anatomy. So do we. Let’s overanalyze them together.

During a recent appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, Grey’s star (and exec producer) Ellen Pompeo revealed she *also* doesn’t know what will happen after season 17 returns from its winter hiatus.

“Can’t say. We honestly have not decided. We’re really trying to figure it out right now,” Ellen said. “What story do we tell to end a show this iconic? How do we do it? I just want to make sure we do this character and this show and the fans, I want to make sure we do it right.”

This has been…an update.
