UFC fighter Felipe "Cabocão" Colares died on Monday, May 1, according to the Brazilian news outlet Combate, as translated by People, and confirmed by MMA Fighting. He was 29.

According to the outlet, his trainer, Rodrigo Babi, confirmed the news, sharing that “Cabocão,” which doesn't seem to have a direct English translation, was hit by a bus while on his way home from training in Guaratiba, Rio de Janeiro.

The fire department reportedly responded "promptly," but, unfortunately, he died due to his injuries en route to Rocha Faria Hospital in nearby Campo Grande.

Colares is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and 10-month-old son Rhavi.

The fighter, who had been with UFC since 2019, was cut from the roster last summer, shortly after suffering "the first stoppage loss of his career in May, in a 3rd round TKO defeat to Chase Hooper—also losing back-to-back fights for the first time in the process." He left with a 2-4 score, having fought six times throughout the years.

He competed for the first time since leaving the UFC just this past February, where he choked out Alioune Nahaye in Paris, France, according to MMA Fighting, which bumped his MMA score to 11-4.

Following news of his death, USA TODAY reporter Nolan King shared a video of Colares allegedly stopping a phone thief in Rio, holding the man down as they assumedly wait for police.

"Rest in peace, Felipe Colares. Fight clips are cool, but here he is stopping an alleged phone thief on the streets in Rio," he wrote alongside the clip.
