To say the race was wet may be an understatement.

When the organizers use a broom to clear the start line from standing water, you know the race will be a wild one. See the highlights from the men's and women's races below.

Puck Pieterse’s return to cross-country was certainly triumphant. The Dutch youngster, who missed the first two World Cups for her block of road races, looked right at home in the slop on her way to a second straight European Championship.

Pieterse, like her countryman Matthieu Van Der Poel, races road, cyclocross, and cross-country professionally. Her cyclocross background definitely helped her in these adverse conditions.

Simon Avondeto’s win is a big step for the Italian. After winning a World Cup and the short-track World Championships as a junior, Avondetto has struggled to put it all together in the elite category. After a 6th and a 10th in the Mairiporã and Araxá World Cup rounds in Brazil, Simon continued his strong season at the European Championships and beat out Araxá World Cup winner Simon Andreassen.

Cross country will return in two weeks to Nové Město for the third round of the World Cup.
