UCLA officially adds ex-Washington QB K.J. Carta-Samuels

UCLA will officially have a veteran presence involved in its quarterback competition heading into the 2018 season.

The Bruins announced Thursday that K.J. Carta-Samuels, a graduate transfer from Washington, will finish his career playing for Chip Kelly at UCLA.

Carta-Samuels was the No. 2 quarterback for Washington behind Jake Browning for the past three seasons. He appeared in 25 games and completed 27-of-47 passes for 310 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Carta-Samuels will have the chance to succeed Josh Rosen as UCLA’s starter, but he will have to beat out redshirt sophomores Devon Modster and Matt Lynch, redshirt freshman Austin Burton and true freshman Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a four-star, top 50 recruit out of Las Vegas.

Modster started two games for the Bruins in 2017 when Rosen was sidelined. Overall for the season, he completed 51-of-79 passes for 671 yards and four touchdowns on the year, including 295 yards and two scores in the Cactus Bowl loss to Kansas State.

Carta-Samuels told CBS that he chose UCLA over Iowa State and Colorado State. After finishing out his degree at Washington, he plans to be with the Bruins for spring practice.
