UC Berkeley's Central Sierra Snow Lab Calling For 6-9 Feet Of Snow This Weekend

A storm is coming, and it's going to be a big one.

The Central Sierra Snow Lab (CSSL), a research field station for UC Berkeley, is forecasting 6-9 feet of new snow this weekend with the majority falling between Friday and Saturday morning. Check out the forecasted totals through Sunday morning:

The Central Sierra Snow Lab is one of the most reliable sources of snow data in the Sierra.

Sitting at 6,894 ft. above sea level, the Lab serves as a reference point for skiers looking to understand how much snow fell/will fall at their favorite ski resort.

Snow totals will vary depending on elevation, geographic location, and other factors, but if the Central Sierra Snow Lab is expecting over six feet of snow, skiers across Lake Tahoe can rest assured that their home mountain is going to get the goods.

The Sierra started the winter off slow with warm temperatures and little snowfall throughout the month of December. Since the middle of January, however, the snow faucet has seemingly been stuck in the on position.

According to the Central Sierra Snow Lab, the Sierra are still behind in median snowfall and Snow Water Equivalent (SWE), but the coming storm should change that.

The CSSL is currently reporting that they're at 85% of median snowfall to date. A cool 72-108 inches (6-9 feet) should push that number over 100% of median.

For those of you planning on traveling to the Sierra this weekend, be sure to stay up to date on road closures, traction laws, and other weather announcements related to the storm.

Stay safe out there, friends. See you at the KT lineup dark and early on Sunday morning? I'll bring the eggs, you bring the coffee.
