U of I opens new outdoor fitness court

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) –Sometimes gyms get packed or they close early and you have nowhere else to workout. That’s why the University of Illinois created a new fitness court on campus.

“Outdoor resistance training opportunities and class opportunities, reducing barriers to access for physical activity,” said Student Wellness Director Alana Harris.

The university received a $50,000 grant from the national fitness campaign that was funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield.

“These grants were written by myself and students together,” Harris said. “So, it was awesome to see them go through that whole process of securing a grant. “

Increased security could soon come to downtown Champaign

Harris said during COVID they noticed a lot of health disparities and wanted a change.

“It was an opportunity for us to make physical activity and exercise available to the campus community and a spot to bring us together,” she added.

Harris said the court, located at the corner of Oak and Gregory on campus is open for the public not just students — and even those who aren’t experts when it comes to fitness.

For anyone who isn’t sure where to start with the equipment, there is a QR code that when scanned will bring you to an app.

“You can select body parts on the app and then it gives you examples of videos how to do those exercises,” Harris said.

But ultimately, the court is meant for one thing.

“It’s reducing barriers again, because it’s giving you ideas, it’s showing you how to do it, but also you can come and use it however you want,” Harris said.

The fitness court also has solar tables you can sit at and plug in your electronic devices while staying in the shade. In the summer, they will also be finishing with the resurfacing of the basketball courts.
