After the loss of Queen Elizabeth II last week, the world mourns the longest reigning English monarch, who served as the Queen of England since 1952.

Buckingham Palace announced on the morning of Sept. 8 that the Queen was placed under medical supervision as her family rushed to her side.

That same day, the 96-year-old monarch died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, surrounded by her family. The royal family later confirmed in a statement: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

  • September 14-19: Following a silent procession to Westminster Hall, the Queen’s coffin will lie in state for four days before her funeral.

The Queen will have a state funeral on Sept. 19 after 10 days of public mourning, according to Politico.

During this time, the Queen’s body will lie in state, and the public will be able to pay their respects. The Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the senior bishop of the Church of England, will lead the service.

What is the dress code for the Queen's funeral?

During the royal family's mourning period, there will be several formal events held in honor of the Queen’s reign, and all working members of the royal family must wear military uniforms to these ceremonies.

Even though he is a non-working royal, Prince Andrew, the Queen's son, will be allowed to wear a uniform at the final vigil as a special mark of respect, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

Prince Harry, however, will not be in military uniform, despite spending a decade in the British Army, according to Harper’s Bazaar. After Harry stepped back from his royal duties in January 2020, he also gave up his honorary military titles, according to Us Weekly.

Other non-royal attendees will likely wear black.
