These U.S. Destinations Are Most Likely to Have a White Christmas in 2023

It's about to be merry and bright in Alaska.

As the song goes: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go. And that couldn't be more accurate for these destinations across America, which are the most likely spots in the nation to see a white Christmas this year.

"Whether you're curling up by a fire with a cup of hot chocolate, sledding, or building a snowman outdoors, a White Christmas adds a special touch for those visiting a new destination," Kelly Johnson, the SVP of marketing (and self-proclaimed travel enthusiast) at the car rental company Sixt, shared in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure. So, her team got to work analyzing historical weather patterns across the U.S. — via data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration — to uncover which spots Americans are most likely to have a snow-filled holiday on Dec. 25.

And, perhaps unsurprisingly, the northernmost states have this one in the bag. After crunching the data, the team found that the one place Americans are guaranteed to see snow this Christmas is Fairbanks, Alaska, which boasts a 100 percent chance of a white Christmas.

“Since weather records began in the early 1900s, Fairbanks has only seen one snowless Christmas in 1934,” the findings noted. “Alaska transforms into a winter wonderland in December with an average snowfall ranging from 20 to 30 inches. The powdery snowfall creates a picturesque Christmas Day scene of glistening landscapes and festive forestry.”

The next most likely place to see snow for Christmas went to Duluth, Minnesota, which has a 92.2 percent chance of snow this year. It was followed by Bozeman, Montana, in third, with a 91.1 percent chance; Marquette, Michigan, in fourth with an 88.2 percent chance; and Caribou, Maine, rounding out the top 5 with an 87.2 percent chance of seeing snow.

As for the rest of the top 10 places, you’ve got a nearly 50 percent chance or better of seeing snow in Idaho Falls, Idaho; Fargo, North Dakota; Burlington, Vermont; Eau Claire, Wisconsin; and Montrose, Colorado. But, we’ve still got a few weeks to go, so keep your eyes peeled on the weather, and maybe quietly ask Santa to deliver the snow you’re after ... just in case.
