Ten years in the making, the film chronicles Tyler’s life, covering everything from the trauma experienced at the hands of his father during his childhood and his unwavering love of his mother, Maxine Perry (who died in 2009), to his jaw-dropping journey from homeless playwright to Hollywood megastar.

Here’s the kicker, though: The film is a labor of love by Tyler’s ex—and the mother of his only child, Aman Tyler Perry—Ethiopian activist, model, and filmmaker, Gelila Bekele. Who is Tyler’s Ex, Gelila Bekele?
Tyler dated Gelila from 2009 to 2020. They met at a Prince concert and, as they say, the rest was history. The pair welcomed their son, Aman, in 2014. Though, that’s one of very few details we actually know about Tyler’s relationship with Gelila. The couple was notoriously private, so it was nothing short of a shock when Tyler revealed that he was single on Facebook in 2020, just days before Christmas.
“This is what a midlife crisis looks like,” he began his Tweet, which was accompanied by what looks to be a mirror gym selfie. “I’m 51, single, and wondering what the next chapter in my life will look like. Whatever it looks like, I’m going to walk with God, be the best father and man I can be, hold my head up high, and try to look my best doing it.”
