Tyler Perry is many things—an actor, director, close friend of Oprah’s, and, of course, a dedicated philanthropist. He’s been known to use his wealth to lift others, from paying the late Cicely Tyson $1 million for just one day of work to donating $2.75 million to Atlanta homeowners. Now Perry is using his voice and wallet to shine light on a senseless tragedy.

This week, Perry shared the story on his Instagram: “A few days ago I got an extremely heartbreaking phone call from my friend, Yvette Noel-Schure. Through her tears and grief she was telling me that in her home country of Grenada, a young man that was like a son to her was murdered. My soul ached as she shared that he was a young, gifted singer who was murdered because he was gay.” The caption continued, with Perry writing that this horrific news reminded him of Matthew Shepard, as well as “all the other victims of racist, homophobic, antisemitic, xenophobic, senseless violence.” According to Perry, the man was just 24. “His mother is devastated,” Perry said.

The tragedy hit home for Perry, too. “The pain of not knowing can be crippling,” he wrote. “It’s the pain that my sister and I carry not knowing what truly happened to my 25-year-old nephew, who we were told hung himself in prison just three years ago. The pain of not knowing is truly gut-wrenching.”

That’s why Perry took matters into his own hands. “Yvette and I are offering a $100,000 dollar reward to anyone who brings forth information that leads to the conviction of the murderer of Josiah ‘Jonty’ Robinson,” he explained in the caption. Perry also shared where to drop any leads: “Anyone with any information can call The Criminal Investigation Division at this number. +1-473-440 3921”

Perry’s post ended with a call to keep Robinson in our hearts and minds until justice can, hopefully, be served. “Please pray for his mother and Yvette and all of those that loved him, as well as every family who has been impacted by senseless violence.”
