At Tyler, the Creator’s Music Festival, Flower-Power Style Takes On a Whole New Meaning

Shannon Gonzales, 24, and Emily Bui, 22
@buiemily
“Super ’70s fun flower boy” was how Gonzales described his Flog Gnaw style, a nod to Tyler, the Creator’s Flower Boy album. Bui wears a Dolls Kill top and was excited to see Majid Jordan, SZA, Kids See Ghosts, Brockhampton, and, “well, just about 99.9 percent of everyone.”
Ana Velasquez, 22, and Juan Velasquez, 24
“I’ve been dying to come to Flog Gnaw since high school,” said Velasquez, who came down from the Bay Area to attend. “Now that I’m graduating college, I get to come and see Tyler and SZA.”

“You have to be extra to stand out in a crowd where everyone’s trying to stand out,” said Garcia, who sported a pair of shattered sunglasses he proclaimed have him “looking kinda dangerous.”
Eddie Figueroa, 20
@eddiefigueroaa
“Earl Sweatshirt’s my joint,” said Figueroa, who traveled all the way from New York for the festival.
Ed Choi, 18
@edchoi_
“My friend had to convince me to come out,” said Choi, as he rushed off to see Rex Orange County, “but I’m glad I did. I love A$AP Rocky.”
Nhu Than, 20
“Um . . . chill?” said Than about her festival style. She came down from Sacramento with her fiancé to see Lauryn Hill.

Diwata and Thor summed up their festival style in just one word. “Gay,” they said in unison before breaking into fits of laughter. They were excited to see Jorja Smith and Brockhampton.
Anthony Dragons, 30
@anthonydragons
Dragons, an L.A.-based rapper, got his festival style from “the moon” and was at his fifth Flog Gnaw.
Noah Carlos, 18
@loserthrift
Carlos runs a Depop account, where he sells his thrift store gems. “I look for anything that jumps out,” he said of his thrifting style.
Kyndall Carter, 18
@kyndallartwork
Carter’s breezy look was inspired by “primary colors and complementary colors,” said her friend Samira. Carter, who goes to art school, was excited to see Lauryn Hill perform.
Naseem Mohammad, 20
@55skulls
Mohammad, a FIT menswear student in New York, just dyed his hair blue. “It was pink until three days ago,” he explained. Overall, Mohammad described his festival style as “very euphoric.”
Simran Randhawa, 23 and Reva Bhatt, 25
@simran / @hybridhues
“It wasn’t intentional,” said Bhatt of matching her friend Randhawa with an all-white festival outfit. Randhawa, a model-journalist, was excited to see SZA, “because she’s a Scorpio.” Bhatt, who works at an ad agency, lowered her Acne sunglasses to show that she “low-key still has tears in my eyes from riding the Zipper an hour ago.”
Shayna Thorson, 19, Quinn Frankel, 16, Sarah Guessous, 17, and Phoebe Darling, 17
@severalsmallmangos / @quuiiiinnnnnn / @sarahguessous / @phooeeebbee
“I actually have pink eye, but I love doing my makeup. So I did my makeup in one eye and wrote pinkeye on the other. It’s pink eye, but fashion,” explained Thorson. Her friend Darling described their coordinated style as “comfortable but unique,” and Guessous was most excited to see A$AP Rocky.

Many musicians have tried their hand at festival organizing—Post Malone just put together Posty Fest, and Chance the Rapper held a Magnificent Coloring Day Festival in 2016—but no rapper-generated festival has had the endurance, scope, and scale of Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. Now in its sixth year, the two-day event in Los Angeles boasted a lineup to rival Coachella: This past weekend, the young crowd was treated to a particularly stacked bill, including the debut performance of Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s Kids See Ghosts project, and showstopping moments from Brockhampton, SZA, Lauryn Hill, and Billie Eilish. There was fun to be had beyond the music, too, namely carnival rides, games, exclusive merch, and, most important, lots and lots of really great street style.

The best-dressed festivalgoers clearly took cues from Flower Boy, Tyler, the Creator’s latest album—floral prints were everywhere, particularly the sunflower variety. Several also subtly coordinated their outfits as a group with matchy-matchy color schemes and complementary accessories, an easy way to spot your friend in the throng for sure.
