Ty Pennington

Ty Pennington didn't mince words when talking about the scary incident that left him hospitalized in the intensive care unit about eight months ago.

While recalling his recent health scare, the former Extreme Makeover: Home Edition host said he "almost died" after the unthinkable happened last summer. But, now that he's recovered, he appears grateful for all the "love" he received during that scary time in his life.

"I'm great," he told Entertainment Tonight reporters in a piece published on Monday, March 4. "You know what's great is if you almost die, you get so much attention," he said of his July 2023 health scare. "It feels so nice to be that loved."

"I'm planning another one..." the 59-year-old joked. "No, I'm kidding!"

"It made me realize you just don't know when your timecard's gonna get pulled, so wake up, live every single day to the fullest," he added. "I mean that's why the 60s is gonna be like time to start doing everything and that's what I love about being part of these projects because I think we all want to make sure we've done things to be remembered."

This past summer, after attending the Barbie movie premiere, the reality TV personality revealed that what he thought was a sore throat was actually an abscess that had been growing for nearly a month and had gotten so big it nearly cut off his airway.

At the time, Pennington documented his sudden health scare and ICU visit in a series of photos he later uploaded to social media. One picture showed him in a hospital bed, throwing a thumbs up to the camera, while another more bleak image captured him intubated.

"Sunday I hit the red carpet for @barbiethemovie, monday I flew to Colorado to start filming in Breckenridge and Tuesday morning I woke up at 4am and could barely breathe 😰," he shared in a statement posted on Instagram.

"Next thing I know, I was intubated and flown to the ICU in Denver," he continued. "Wednesday I had surgery and yesterday afternoon I was released from the ICU 🙌🏼."

Pennington went on to thank the "amazing" hospital staff that saved his life and helped him recover, telling his fans that this experience was a "great reminder to LISTEN to your body when it’s telling you something 😳😅 #justhappytobehere."

As for what's next for Pennington, he couldn't be happier to return as host for the fifth season of HGTV's reality competition series Rock the Block, which premiered at 9 p.m. ET on Monday.

"I think this season could be the greatest season ever because there's so much at stake because this is about pride and saying, 'I am a winner.' And when you've got four teams that are trying to prove themselves, there is nothing they're gonna hold back, and that's the kind of design, that's the kind of passion I love to see," he told the outlet.
