Two Trumps Took New York Fashion Week, but Only One Was Late

With the midterms approaching, you can bet your bottom dollar that outspoken designers like Christian Siriano, Tory Burch, and Prabal Gurung are using their platforms to encourage their customers to vote. In Siriano's case, he even offered New Yorkers a suggestion via a less-than-subtle tee: "Vote for Cynthia." (Ms. Nixon, a gubernatorial candidate in New York, was seated front row at the show.)

But they're not the only designers with their hand in the political pudding. Taoray Wang and Chiara Boni La Petite Robe both invited a some political figures of their own. Hint: Their last name rhymes with "rump."

Yes, two (2) Trumps took to the front rows at NYFW this week: Lara Trump (wife of Donald's second-eldest son, Eric) at Chiara Boni La Petite Robe, and Tiffany Trump, the president's youngest daughter with second wife Marla Maples, at Taoray Wang.

According to a few peeved showgoers, Tiffany was running a bit behind schedule, holding up the runway by 45 minutes. (The Georgetown Law student might just be tied with Nicki Minaj or Madonna for number of minutes holding up a show.) Lara, on the other hand, was punctual enough to chat politics with WWD.

"His heart is in the right place," she said of her father-in-law, aka 45. "If you look at where the country has come since he took office — just sheer numbers — there is no metric that is worse because he is president. In fact, everything is better since he took office.” Lara — taking a style cue from her mother-in-law Melania by wearing Louboutins — quit her job as a producer at Inside Edition when Donald began his presidential run; she is currently working on his campaign team.

The Trumps have never strayed too far from the fashion circuit. You'll recall that Tiffany made headlines at the fall 2017 Philipp Plein show after editors allegedly refused to be seated near her. Then there was the infamous mix-up when, while requesting a ticket to Harper's Bazaar's annual NYFW party (which will forever go down in history as "that one where Cardi B threw a shoe"), Tiff's publicist reached out to Harper's Magazine, a culture and politics publication which is definitely not the same thing.

The Donald himself even attended a fashion show or two — which is on-brand given all of his wives were models at one time or another. See evidence below of Trump with Maples and one Anna Wintour in 1995.

In case you missed it, cat walking is a hereditary trait (see: Kaia Gerber; Gigi and Bella Hadid; Jude Law's kids), so it only made sense that Ivanka had her turn on the runway, too. Remember this?

Meanwhile, following the 2016 election, a number of designers (Siriano, Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, etc.) made public statements noting that they would refuse to dress the First Lady, Melania. Considering she buys her own clothes, however, that never really appeared to be an issue. Plus, she's also got her stylist/designer Hervé Pierre on hand to whip her up something now and again. Must be nice.
