Two Tons of Bazzini's Pistachios Are Being Recalled Due to Salmonella Concerns

You’d better check the packaging on your pistachios before reaching for your afternoon snack—Bazzinil LLC, based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has issued a voluntary recall of 4,000 pounds of roasted pistachios that may have been contaminated with salmonella. The pistachios included in the recall were distributed in New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Washington D.C., and Virginia.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, routine testing by the company revealed that some of the pistachios may contain the bacteria, so Bazzinil has voluntarily stopped producing and distributing the affected pistachios while the FDA and the company investigate. Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported yet, but to be on the safe side, you should throw out or return any of the recalled pistachios you have in your cupboard.

Five specific Bazzinil pistachio products are included in the recall, all with “best by” dates up to 2019—so be sure to get rid of them now so you don’t forget later. Here’s a list of the products included in the recall (all of them have red, white, and blue packaging):

  • Bazzini’s Roasted & Salted In-Shell Pistachios Super Colossal Natural in 5-pound bags with the UPC number 0 75062 30701 5

Salmonella can cause serious and even fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy people can also get seriously sick, and usually experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, so don’t take any chances if you do have a bag of recalled pistachios in your kitchen. If you’ve already eaten them and start to experience symptoms, make sure to visit your doctor and let them know that you may have eaten contaminated food.
