Forget Cupcakes. N.Y.C.’s Famed Magnolia Bakery Is Now Making Cannabis Edibles.

One of New York City’s most popular bakeries is taking dessert to heady new heights.

Magnolia Bakery, perhaps best known for its Sex and the City cameo, launched cannabis edibles based on its iconic treats this week. Created in partnership with Green Thumb Industries, the two limited-edition bars are inspired by the bakery’s famous banana pudding and red velvet cake.

The bars are separated into 10 pieces, with each piece containing 10 mg of THC. For the unacquainted, THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces a “high.” The Swirled Famous Banana Pudding Bar is a tasty mix of vanilla pudding, crunchy vanilla cookies, and freeze-dried bananas, while the Red Velvet Piece Ahhh Cake Bar combines flavors of moist crimson cake, cream cheese tang, and rich dark chocolate. The red velvet edition also includes 100 mg of CBD (10 mg per piece). This nonpsychoactive component of cannabis is said to have certain medicinal properties.

The bars will initially be sold at Rise Dispensaries in Illinois, Nevada, and Massachusetts, with wider availability across the three states to follow. Prices range from $18 to $30 depending on the flavor and the state.

“Magnolia Bakery is dedicated to crafting delicious desserts for visitors of all tastes and preferences and can now share our signature flavors with cannabis consumers in three markets,” Sara Gramling, vice president of PR and partnerships at Magnolia Bakery, said in a statement. “We hope that fans enjoy this all-new way to get baked with Magnolia Bakery.”

Magnolia opened on a cobblestone corner in the West Village in 1996, but has since evolved beyond a brick-and-mortar bakery. It now offers treats via its online shop and recently rolled out Banana Pudding Cookies to grocery stores. The new partnership with Green Thumb Industries will allow Magnolia to break into a booming market.

“There is no real downside to Magnolia, as consumer opinions on cannabis are now relativity liberal,” Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail, told CNN. “These products will be sold through dispensaries rather than being available in mainstream retailers, so people not interested in marijuana will not be exposed to them.”

The endeavor could generate some sweet revenue, too. Edibles have grown to 12 percent of total sales of weed, according to a recent report by Cannabis research firm Headset. In total, edibles generated about $2 billion in sales last year, up nearly 6 percent from the year prior.
