  • The Paris 2024 Olympic logo is causing quite a stir on Twitter today.

  • Some are being rude about the Marianne of France symbolism, but most are just meme’ing the heck out of it.

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris won’t happen until:

  1. We manage to survive the year of our Lord 2019 (HOW IS IT STILL THE SAME YEAR US CAME OUT?!).

  2. The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo wrap up.

  3. We land a human on Mars, if Elon Musk gets his way. Terrifying Fun fact!

Even so, France is hard at work getting ready for 2024 just the same. The latest and greatest in French Olympic updates comes in the form of a new flame logo featuring the lips of Marianne (a symbol of the French Republic), but, uh, not everyone “gets” it.

The Olympics officially unveiled the Paris 2024 logo this week, and Twitter reacted in top form: by meme’ing the hell out of it.

Before we get to that, though, do yourself a favor and behold the logo in all its Parisian glory:

Without further ado, here’s a selection of the most hilarious Olympic logo memes and comparisons, from Fleabag’s infamous pencil haircut to Friends:

This all seems to be in good fun (for the most part), but the Paris Olympics has backup where it counts—from its pal, the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

The new 2024 logo is a big departure from the Eiffel Tower–themed design Paris used when bidding for the Olympics in the first place.

The new design features Marianne, a symbol and allegory of French values like equality and liberty. If you’re an art history buff, you probably recognize her likeness from Eugène Delacroix’s “Liberty Leading the People” painting.
