Wordle players are seeing a different side of the game and many aren’t liking it.

On Friday, folks went on The New York Times site for the the strategic word game and tried to correctly guess the new five-letter secret word. But no one could've predicted that the answer to #251 puzzle would have double letters.

Similar to previous answers like “shake” — which had a ton of possibilities — many participants were lost while figuring out “vivid.” A quick scroll through #Wordle 251 Twitter reveals that players had more black boxes than green or yellow. Even when some got close to solving it, there were still a number of options that couldn’t be immediately ruled out by the trial-and-error process.

After going through words like “rigid,” “lipid” and “livid,” players quickly used up their six tries and ended up with no score or “X/6.” Though this isn’t the first time a guess has stumped people, many didn’t expect Wordle to make the game challenging in this way. A closer look at “vivid” shows that there are two v's and i's with only a third different letter.

“They need to tell u when there [are] double letters 😭😭😭,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Should not be able to have 2 of the same letters in the word,” another added. “Why didn’t anyone tell me you can use a letter more than once 🤯,” someone else commented.

The defeat was particularly tough for players who say they use “vivid” in their vocabulary “regularly.” What’s more, the tricky adjective ended many streaks and new players shared they wouldn’t be returning to play the next day.

“My first loss.. I am completely devastated,” a different fan said. “Basically gave up, i am so livid that the answer was ______,” a follower tweeted without giving the answer away. “😐😐😐😐 first time trying this & I never wanna again,” a player tweeted.

After Wordle debuted on the internet in October, it skyrocketed in popularity and over the past several months, users have seen a variety of scenarios unfold while playing. Despite the #Wordle Twitter outcry about double letters, the #252 puzzle answer, "spill," had one double letter. Most recently, #255 also had another one — “rupee.”

Does this mean players should assume that double letters are now a staple of the game? We’re not sure, but we’ll definitely be on our toes from now on.
