Why Is There A Hershey's Boycott On Social Media?Hershey's

Mere hours after Hershey's Canada unveiled this year's "HER for SHE" campaign, an International Women’s Day-inspired promotion that celebrates "the women changing the future in your community," the candy company found itself at the center of a social media boycott.

Some people on Twitter have called for a boycott of Hershey's due to the appearance of a trans woman on its "HER for SHE" chocolate bar wrappers in Canada. The woman, trans activist and speaker Fae Johnstone, is one of five women to be featured in the campaign. Johnstone announced the news of the promotion on Twitter earlier this week and also expressed their hope for the future.

"We still have a long way to go in the fight to end misogyny, patriarchy and gender-based violence. I hope this campaign helps give more young women and girls role models and possibility models. And shows them how we can be change the world, together," Johnstone tweeted.

As of today, March 2, #BoycottHersheys is the #1 trending topic on Twitter in the United States. Some users went so far as to label the wrapper "a slap in the face to women" and that it was "erasing women." Others expressed their support of both Hershey's and Johnstone, calling the online boycott transphobic.

"Today continues the trend of rampant transphobia online! Now we have #BoycottHersheys because they dared put a trans woman on their advertising for international woman’s day. Fae just wants to be a role model. And now she’s being used to spread hate," one user wrote.

Over on TikTok, users appear to be perplexed that the company highlighted the word "she" in Hershey's and not "her" for their Women's History Month wrappers in the United States.

"For those not understanding it could have read 'celebrate her!' Now it reads 'celebrate she' it’s grammatically awkward," one commenter wrote.
