The first trailer for the long-awaited follow-up to the 1996 tornado blockbuster "Twister" aired during the 2024 Super Bowl on Feb. 11.

"Twisters" stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell as they join forces to try to predict — and even tame — the power of tornadoes. The film premieres in theaters on July 19, according to Universal Pictures.

The trailer shows Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones) as she returns to the plains to test a new storm tracking system, where she meets Tyler Owens (Powell), a reckless storm chaser with a big social media following.

Who has been cast in 'Twisters'?

In addition to Edgar-Jones and Powell, the movie's cast includes Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani and Maura Tierney, according to Universal Pictures.

"Twisters" is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the Oscar-nominated writer and director of "Minari."

What do we know about 'Twisters'?

A representative for Universal previously confirmed to TODAY.com a follow-up to the 1996 classic was in the works on Oct. 18, 2022.

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are developing the sequel, "Twisters," and Warner Bros. Entertainment will be co-financing the film.

Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley are set to produce the film, according to Universal. "Twisters" will have viewers chasing the storm again with a screenplay written by "The Revenant" screenwriter Mark L. Smith, according to Universal.

Jan de Bont directed the original film, which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, and Stephen Spielberg executive produced. "Twister" was a massive success, selling more than $494 million at box offices worldwide and featuring other cast members like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Todd Field.

The movie followed Hunt's character, Dr. Jo Harding, and a team of students preparing to test a new data-gathering device in a powerful tornado. It was lauded for its groundbreaking special effects and inspired a theme-park ride at Universal Studios.

Universal did not say if Hunt has signed on for the sequel. Paxton died at age 61 due to complications from a heart surgery in 2017, and Hoffman died in 2014 at 46.
