Twisted Metal TV show Sweet Tooth

TV series adaptations of video games seem to be all the rage right now, with series like Halo, The Last of Us, and The Witcher all resonating with fans in one way or another. The latest adaptation is a little bit of a weird one, but if NBCUniversal is to be believed, it’s proving to be very popular.

Deadline has reported that Twisted Metal, an adaptation of the vehicular combat game published by Sony, has been a huge hit on NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock. The report says that the series has been the most-watched comedy premiere to date, and the average viewer watched three episodes a session.

It’s honestly a bit surprising to see it doing so well. The first proper clip we saw for the show was during a presentation from Sony earlier this year, and showed the creepy clown character Sweet Tooth – portrayed by Samoa Joe and voiced by Will Arnett – singing The Thong Song while beating up John Doe (Anthony Mackie).

It wasn’t received particularly well at the time, in part because of where it was shown, and in part because it’s a deeply strange scene without any additional context, but later clips seemed to attract more positive attention. It hasn’t exactly been a hit with critics, having a Metascore of 53/100 on Metacritic and a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the user scores have been much higher, at 8.0 and 94%, respectively.

Fans of the video games will probably be hoping that the success of the show leads to more games, as the Twisted Metal series has been on hold for quite some time now. The last game to be released was Twisted Metal in 2012, and although multiple attempts have been made to make new games since then, none have been successful, and it seemed like Sony had given up trying for a while.

This new series shows that there’s interest, at least, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that Sony is paying close attention.
