/twɪn fleɪm/

You might know this term from Escaping Twin Flames, a horrifying Netflix docuseries about a cult that sounds like it’ll help you find your love match but actually promotes less hot things like stalking and abuse. It also could have popped up on your Spotify—artists running the gamut from Taylor Swift to Machine Gun Kelly have mentioned it in songs. But in some spirituality teachings (from the Before Netflix Era, possibly dating back to Plato), a twin flame is actually your perfect other half.

Bear with us, because it does sound a little woo-woo: The theory, which was popularized in the late ’90s by Elizabeth Clare Prophet, a controversial spiritual leader, says that twin flames are two people who share one soul—because the soul has been split between them. “The twin flame represents the healthiest love you can achieve in this lifetime,” says Kate Rose, author of You Only Fall in Love Three Times. “There is a shared source of energy within yourself and a romantic partner that together creates a love and connection that defies all you’ve been taught is possible about love.” Sound like a soulmate? It’s beyond that, apparently. Rose explains that you can have multiple soulmates—and they don’t have to be romantic—but a twin flame is strictly romantic, and there’s only one out there for each of us.

There’s just one caveat: To find your twin flame, you have to do the work. “You can only achieve your twin flame after bringing awareness to your romantic patterns, healing your childhood wounds, and honoring what you deserve,” Rose says. According to believers, this means your twin flame will enter your life only when you’re ready and open. That may be a frustrating bit of advice, but it’s a whole lot better than “Love comes when you least expect it!”
