TWICE member Jeongyeon is halting her activities with the group, citing “panic and psychological anxiety” as the reasons for her indefinite hiatus.

TWICE’s parent company, JYP Entertainment, announced the news on August 18 with a statement posted to the girl group’s official fan page, which was also shared to TWICE's official Twitter account.

“Jeongyeon is currently experiencing panic and psychological anxiety. Although Jeongyeon was moving forward with her schedule by simultaneously taking action for recovery, we value our artists’ health as the most important issue. Therefore, after deep discussions internally accompanied by professional medical measures, we have decided that it is needed for Jeongyeon to have sufficient time to focus on her recovery and rest,” the company wrote. “After discussions with Jeongyeon herself and other TWICE members, we inform you that Jeongyeon will be unable to attend TWICE's activity for a while in future schedule. As the artist label, we will provide the best procedures for Jeongyeon to recover with sufficient amount of time. We kindly ask for your love and support for Jeongyeon’s full recovery.”

The news marks Jeongyeon’s second hiatus for her mental health in less than a year. Back in October 2020, JYP announced the singer wouldn’t be taking part in the promotions for TWICE’s second studio album, Eyes Wide Open, also because of anxiety. Her hiatus lasted three months, and she rejoined her fellow members at the 30th Seoul Music Awards in January 2021.

Jeongyeon isn’t the only TWICE member to rightfully put mental health first in recent years either. Back in the summer of 2019, Mina didn't perform on the group’s TWICELIGHTS world tour. JYP said at the time it was because of “sudden extreme anxiety and insecurity toward performing on stage.” Though she kept being part of shoots and recording activities, Mina’s public appearance break lasted for six months.

Speaking to Teen Vogue in June of last year, TWICE opened up about mental health and how crucial a role it plays in our wellbeing. "Now, after debuting, I'm realizing that health isn't just about bodily health. Our mental states are intimately tied to our physical health," Jihyo, the group’s leader, shared. Speaking to Time in 2019, Nayeon also admitted all members deal with “similar anxieties" from time to time. “Physical health and mental health are the most important things that members should take care of,” Dahyun also commented then.

Of course, following JYP’s new announcement, ONCEs have taken to Twitter to show their support and love for Jeongyeon with the hashtag #WeLoveYouJeongyeon.
