Turkish Airlines’ New Uniforms Might Just Make It the Most Fashionable Airline
A style makeover should accompany every new transition in life.
In celebration of 85 years of service and a new home base airport, Turkish Airways is launching a brand-new, high-fashion uniform for cabin crew.
Designed by Milanese haute couturier Ettore Bilotta (who has also designed uniforms for Etihad and Alitalia), the new uniforms are meant to represent the airline’s links to both East and West and modernity and tradition.
“When I started to design for Turkish Airlines, the first thing that inspired me was Istanbul,” Bilotta said in a statement. “This city has been a melting pot for art and civilization for centuries and has a rare richness as a common heritage of many cultures.”
The history of Istanbul is reflected in the uniforms with nods to traditional calligraphy and mosaics. Bilotta has also incorporated “new interpretations of Turkish motifs, which emphasize modern lines, into foulards and ties to reflect a contrast and duality.”
The clothing collection includes hats, gloves, dresses, bags, and accessories for cabin crew. Uniforms for cockpit, flying chefs and ground services will also receive a similar revamp.
The new uniforms will be put into service in October, after the Istanbul New Airport opens. The airport will be the new operating base of Turkish Airlines. When it opens (expected October 29, Turkey’s Republic Day), the airport could become the busiest in the world, with an estimated capacity for 150 million passengers every year. The capacity could potentially be expanded to 200 million, according to airport managers.
Building costs are expected to finish somewhere around $12 billion.
