Tumblr's Most Popular Ships of 2019

Did your faves make the list?

The end of 2019 is nigh and with it closes another year of pop culture obsessions, from the climactic Avengers: Endgame to the final episodes of Game of Thrones to another year of BTS domination. Luckily, Tumblr is around to chronicle it all as a beloved online destination for fandoms of all kinds.

On Dec. 2, Tumblr released their year-end top lists, which are the result of tracking searches, original posts, reblogs, and likes on the platform from between October 21, 2018, and October 20, 2019. The final lists comprise many corners of fandom, but perhaps most fun to track are Tumblr's top ships — a.k.a. the pop culture relationships and friendships fans can't help but stan.

Tumblr's top 20 ships from the past year span TV, movies, YouTube, and more. In the top five are the Ineffable Husbands from Good Omens, Klance from Legendary Defender, Juliantina from Amar a muerte, Reddie from IT, and finally, Jikook from BTS. The complete list is full of queer ships, which makes sense according to Tumblr's head of content insights Amanda Brennan.

"Queer shipping has always been a cornerstone of fan culture, seeking out relationships where the characters just have chemistry with each other or a dynamic that feels so right, no matter what their canon status is," Brennan says. "Tumblr is truly where you can be the version of yourself you want to be in the world, celebrating what you love with the people who love it just as much as you do."

A ship like Jikook, for example, celebrates moments (both real and imaginary, and both platonic and not so platonic) between Jimin and Jungkook of BTS. Their friendship is inspiring, as are the ones among the other members. BTS themselves have even jokingly leaned into fan ships — like when the official BTS Twitter changed its name to "Sope" this past April Fools Day in homage to Suga and J-Hope's friendship. Plus, it doesn't hurt that BTS has a massively engaged fandom generally; it shouldn't come as a surprise that BTS is on Tumblr's overall top 10 as well.

"BTS has such a powerful social fandom because the group is everywhere, fans can spend all of their time diving into endless content about the group," Brennan adds. "As they do that on places like Tumblr, they find each other, and the ARMY community that fans have built is so strong. People spend time in fandom not just for the group, but for the friends and people they find there."
