Tulum's Airport Is Officially Open — See the Flight Schedule for American, Delta, and More U.S. Airlines

The Riviera Maya in Mexico has long been an unquestionable destination favorite, lined with dozens of beachfront resorts and a lively nightlife scene. But travelers yearning for a more laidback, bohemian vibe can now fly further south into Tulum’s brand-new Felipe Carrilo Puerto International Airport (TQO), which welcomed its first-ever international flights just last week.

Travelers visiting Tulum will no longer have to fuss getting to Cancun International Airport, tacking on an additional two-hour journey. Instead, the new airport is situated just 30 minutes by car to Tulum’s most famed beaches and Mayan ruins.

Several domestic carriers, like American, Delta, and United, have already kicked off nonstop flights to Tulum, with additional routes underway. This latest expansion offers even more travel possibilities to Mexico for fliers across the U.S. from the following cities.

American Airlines

Three of American’s hubs have nonstop service to Tulum, as the airline inaugurated service to the new international airport on opening day last week. American operates a once-daily service from Charlotte and Miami with the following schedule:

  • Depart Charlotte (CLT) 11:07 a.m. — Arrive Tulum (TQO) 1:20 p.m.

  • Depart Tulum (TQO) 2:20 p.m. — Arrive Charlotte (CLT) 6:24 p.m.

  • Depart Miami (MIA) 12:05 p.m. — Arrive Tulum (TQO) 1:15 p.m.

  • Depart Tulum (TQO) 2:15 p.m. — Arrive Miami (MIA) 5:10 p.m.

Additionally, travelers can also choose from twice-daily flights from its Dallas-Fort Worth mega-hub, which departs in the morning or by mid-day. American offers two afternoon departures from Tulum, getting travelers back to Dallas-Fort Worth before early evening. All three routes clock in at under three hours and are served by a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Delta Air Lines

Also on March 28, Delta inaugurated year-round service to Tulum from its mega-hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), offering seamless connections to more than 300 cities across the U.S. and worldwide. While Atlanta is the only airport to see nonstop Tulum flights for now, it’s possible that Delta will bring service from New York, Detroit, and Minneapolis, among others down the line.

For now, Delta’s sole Tulum flight is just shy of three hours, operated with its narrowbody 737-800 aircraft. The airline’s schedule is aptly planned for resort travelers, as the once-daily flight departs Atlanta at 11:10 a.m. before touching down at 1 p.m. local time. Departing Tulum, the flight leaves at 2:25 p.m. and arrives at 6:08 p.m. in Atlanta.

JetBlue

JetBlue’s planned Tulum service hasn’t started just yet, but the airline announced that the new flight will kick off on June 13. This new flight will depart once daily out of John F. Kennedy International Airport, connecting New York-based travelers to Tulum in under 4.5 hours.

This year-round flight will take off from New York-JFK at 7:55 a.m. and arrive at 11:15 a.m. When it’s time to leave paradise, travelers will depart Tulum at 12:45 p.m. and return at 5:50 p.m. Travelers will enjoy flying on JetBlue’s staple Airbus A320 aircraft, equipped with live TV, free Wi-Fi, and snacks onboard.

As a leisure-based airline, JetBlue has been serving Mexico for nearly two decades. The airline’s newest Tulum service is a welcome addition to its existing flights to other tourist hotspots in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Los Cabos.

United Airlines

On March 31, United started service between Tulum and a few hubs across the country. Travelers can now fly on the airline’s once-daily routes from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport with the following flight times:

  • Depart Chicago (ORD) 11:07 a.m. — Arrive Tulum (TQO) 1:20 p.m.

  • Depart Tulum (TQO) 2:10 p.m. — Arrive Chicago (ORD) 6:05 p.m.

  • Depart Newark (EWR) 10:07 a.m. — Arrive Tulum (TQO) 1:15 p.m.

  • Depart Tulum (TQO) 2:25 p.m. — Arrive Newark (EWR) 7:23 p.m.

  • Depart Houston (IAH) 9:35 a.m. — Arrive Tulum (TQO) 11:55 a.m.

  • Depart Tulum (TQO) 1:05 p.m. — Arrive Houston (IAH) 3:31 p.m.

Furthermore, United plans to debut service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in time for Memorial Day weekend. This flight will be operated seasonally, inaugurating on May 23. United plans to use a Boeing 737-900 aircraft for all four new routes to Tulum, with a total of up to 22 weekly flights at its peak.

Spirit Airlines

Last fall, low-cost Spirit Airlines announced plans to launch Tulum flights from two major Florida airports, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, on March 28. However, the carrier later postponed the start date of these Tulum routes until further notice due to engine part constraints of its fleet.
