How to try the viral TikTok tie-dye trend over the holiday weekend

With over 777 million video views on TikTok, and 3 million posts on Instagram, the hashtag #tiedye is getting a lot of attention. With tie-dye is one of 2020’s biggest trends, why not join in on the fun?

That’s what Jeanetta Joseph and her two daughters, Sala 10, and Drue, 7, did for Yahoo Life’s Crafting with Kids, a self-shot video series featuring families from across the country and their quarantine craft ideas.

The Joseph’s tips & steps for tie-dying:

You will need:

Tie-dye kit

Water

Plain white shirts (or other articles of clothing)

Rubber bands

Large baking pan

Cooling rack

Plastic wrap

Gloves (optional)

Step 1: Mix the tie-dye with water.

  • Tip: Jeanetta used this kit by Create Basics from Walmart, which she likes because the powder is already in the bottles, and all you have to do is add water.

Step 2: Prep the shirts. Lay the shirts out flat.

  • To make a “bullseye,” pinch the fabric where you want the pattern to start, then pull it up into a tube-like shape. Secure it with rubber bands. The number of rubber bands dictates the design.

  • For a swirl pattern, pinch the fabric where you want the swirl to start, then twist the shirt until it forms a circular shape. Secure the loose ends with rubber bands, crosswise, so they make wedges. The number of rubber bands determines the number of wedges.

Step 3: Time to dye!

  • Tip: Make sure to dampen the shirts with water first, so the dye absorbs into the fabric. And don’t be afraid to get heavy-handed with the amount of dye — the more dye, the deeper the color.

  • Add one color per section (it doesn’t have to be perfect).

Step 4: Wrap the shirts in plastic and let them dry for 6-8 hours.

Step 5: Once the shirts are fully dry, remove the plastic and the rubber bands. Rinse the shirts with water to get rid of excess dye, then run them through the washing machine before wearing.
