You Need to Try These Curly Freestyle Braids for Summer

From Cosmopolitan

Hi, hello, and welcome back to The Braid Up. On this week's episode, we're giving you a fun summer style to add to your braid rotation. Meet these two freestyle braids with curly ends: They're kind of like pigtails, but actually, you know, cool. Our braid expert, Stasha Harris, shows us how to recreate the look IRL, ahead.

Here's everything you need to know before you text your braider:

1. Sulfates tend to be too harsh for curls—they end up stripping your hair of its natural oils. Lather up with a sulfate-free shampoo, instead, before you start braiding. It'll take out any residue, while still leaving your hair nice and soft.

2. You're going to need a ton of moisture, especially since your hair will be braided up for weeks. Wash your hair with a deep conditioner to make sure its super hydrated—this creates a strong, healthy base for your braids.

3. A hack you can give your braider? Slap a golf ball-sized amount of edge control on the back of your hand while you're braiding. This makes it a lot easier to access the product (since you'll be using it a ton during the process). You can also use a rat-tail comb to swirl up your baby hairs into a cute design.

4. To make sure your style looks fresh for as long as possible, throw on a silk or satin scarf before you go to bed. When you wake up in the AM, hit your hair with a leave-in conditioner to keep your braids moisturized.

And that's it! Be sure to check out the video above to see exactly how the style comes together.
