Trump Erases Transgender Healthcare Protections During Pride Month
The Trump administration has erased transgender healthcare protections implemented by Obama.
The rule comes in the middle of Pride Month, and on the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting.
Donald Trump has decided to erase Obama-era transgender healthcare protections two weeks into Pride Month and on the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting.
This truly awful rule was finalized by the Trump administration on Friday, and, per the New York Times, means that the "federal government no longer recognizes gender identity as an avenue for sex discrimination in healthcare." In other words, Trump just made it a whole lot easier for doctors, hospitals, and health insurance companies to discriminate against people who are transgender—including denying medical treatment.
Deputy executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, told the New York Times, "It’s really, really horrendous to not only gut nondiscrimination protections, but to gut nondiscrimination protections in the middle of a pandemic. This rule opens a door for a medical provider to turn someone away for a Covid-19 test just because they happen to be transgender.”
The Human Rights Campaign plans to sue the Trump administration, and said in a statement, "We will not let this attack on our basic right to be free from discrimination in healthcare go unchallenged."
