Truly Wants to Make Lemonade Seltzer Big in 2020

There’s no denying that 2019 was the year of spiked seltzer. For whatever reason, White Claw, Truly and their competitors caught on like wildfire last year, capturing the attention of drinkers who were sick of both laws and normal beers. Now, it seems that at least one brand is hoping that bubbly-boozed fervor translates into a reappraisal of hard lemonade.

This week, Truly announced that it’ll be expanding their offerings to include a line of Lemonade Hard Seltzer, just in time for cold weather drinking. According to press materials, this new line of lemonade-flavored and seltzer is available in Original, Mango, Black Cherry, and Strawberry varieties, meaning you don’t even really need to love lemonade that much to find something you’d enjoy sipping on.

While some hard lemonades have been the butt of jokes back when traditional beer was equated with masculinity, the spiked seltzer revolution has led the Boston Beer Company brand to believe that putting their own spin on the product category was worth a shot.

“We took the feedback from drinkers and created Truly Lemonade for those looking for more flavor than traditional hard seltzer yet not willing to compromise on calories, carbs or sugar,” Casey O’Neill, Boston Beer Company’s Senior Manager of Product Development said. “It really is the best of both worlds and brings together flavor and refreshment in a way that nothing else in the category does right now.”

While January isn’t necessarily ideal lemonade drinking weather, it’s worth noting that these things could serve as a useful way to cut back on the carbs and calories of booze without resorting to Dry January. Just like other Truly offerings, these lemonades contain only 100 calories and one gram of sugar while weighing in at 5 percent alcohol by volume.

So with that in mind, you might as well get a head start on picking your favorite flavor now so you’ve got it locked in by the time warmer weather rolls around. I’m sure someone will have come up with a fun catchphrase that effectively makes drinking hard lemonade cool again.
