According to iProperty Management, the average rent in the United States in 2020 (the most recent year for which data is available) was $1,104. They also offer the median rent amount for each state as it's changed in the last 20 years, with adjustments for inflation.
Armed with that information, I looked at what you can get in each state with $1,000 rent (according to Zillow), and the results are pretty fascinating.
3.In the lovely Tuscon, Arizona, you can rent an 812 sq. ft. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment for $1,000. The place has in-unit laundry, a walk-in closet, and a covered parking spot.
4.If a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house that's 1,070 sq. ft. and has a fenced-in yard sounds good to you, check out a house like this in Searcy, Arkansas.
If you're dreaming of living in Los Angeles, you can get a 220 sq. ft. studio with 1 bathroom. It's minutes from downtown, but there's no kitchen or parking.
8.Wilmington, Delaware, offers a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment on the 3rd floor of a home. The 900 sq. ft. space is available at $975 each month (plus $50 for a parking spot).
11.In Kihei, Hawaii, a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom 459 sq. ft. apartment. It's a rent-controlled building where water is included with rent, but the renter covers other utilities.
18.Louisiana has this beautiful 1,100 sq. ft. home in Bossier City to rent for $1K. The 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom space has a fenced-in yard, is pet friendly (which is becoming frustratingly rare), and has hardwood floors.
21.You can settle down in a 2nd-floor apartment in Ware, Massachusetts, in a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment that includes a nice backyard and glorious deck.
23.St. Paul, Minnesota, seems to be the best place for renters on a budget in the state. You can rent a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1000 sq. ft. apartment with water and garbage covered. It has all new appliances, and pets "will be considered on a case-by-case basis."
24.In Meridian, Mississippi, you can rent this lovely 3 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom home 1,320 sq. ft. home that's being updated as the owner tries to rent it out. You'll enjoy some new features to the home and also get a chance to enjoy the big front and back yards.

32.New York has different options depending on if you're upstate or downstate. In Rochester, New York, you can rent a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment for $1,000.
In the city, however, $1,000 looks more like renting a room, like this furnished one in Forest Hills.
