'True Detective' Returns to HBO After a Five-Year Hiatus

True Detective fans near and far can hardly contain their excitement!

After nearly five years, the much-anticipated fourth season of the anthology crime series—True Detective: Night Country—is returning to HBO. Following three seasons set in warmer climates (Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, the outskirts of Los Angeles, and the Ozarks), the fourth season is headed to the frigid environment of Ennis, Alaska, a town so far north, it experiences the polar night phenomenon, in which the town is shrouded in darkness for up to two months.

Suffice to say, True Detective: Night Country is bound to be unlike anything we’ve seen before in the series. It’s not just because of the location and new cast (including Academy Award winner Jodie Foster), though—True Detective: Night Country is from a new set of producers, too. After creator Nic Pizzolatto's contract with HBO ended, the future of True Detective was up in the air, but then Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and writer-director Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) got on board, and Night Country is the result.
