True-Crime Fans Will Love Netflix’s New Series ‘Sophie: A Murder in West Cork’
Netflix is giving true-crime fans another reason to break out their detective hats.
The streaming service just dropped the first official trailer for Sophie: A Murder in West Cork, a docuseries that examines the life and tragic death of Sophie Toscan du Plantier.
In the trailer, we’re re-introduced to Sophie, who was a French television producer. It all began in December 1996 when she was beaten to death outside her holiday home in County Cork, Ireland.
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the investigation, which included multiple attempts to extradite the prime suspect. The documentary is told through the perspective of friends, family, investigators and people who crossed paths with Sophie right before the murder.
“She was a French lady,” one person says in the clip. “I was the last person who spoke to her, except whoever saw her after me.”
The area had never experienced a tragedy of this caliber, which made the investigation difficult for law enforcement. “We had no experience of serious crime,” someone says. Another person adds, “We were afraid there was a murderer among us.”
For 25 years, the public’s questions have gone unanswered. Sophie: A Murder in West Cork is supposed to change that.
The docuseries was directed by John Dower (Thrilla in Manila). Jonathan Chinn (Black Sheep), Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man) and Suzanne Lavery (Til Death Do Us Part).
Sophie: A Murder in West Cork will hit Netflix on June 30.
