Captioning the photo, “No tea no shade but who the fuck is that,” Sivan took a selfie to debut his brunette, which he left slightly damp to air dry—a curly hair trick he revealed earlier this year in Vogue’s “Beauty Secrets.” Tried and true fans know that the switch-up recalls his rise-to-stardom, during which his days were spent not on tour but rather on YouTube. It also marks a joining of the ranks with a long list of celebrities who opted for major hair transformations in 2018, such as Anne Hathaway, who went red, Kylie Jenner, who experimented with silver tips, and Gaga who most recently opted for electric blue. But while playing with eye-popping hues is fun, there’s something undeniably fresh about going back to one’s roots for the new days ahead—a sort of literal, and emotional, grounding if you will. And from the looks of it, 2019 is going to be a great year for Sivan, and his many admirers too.
