  • Trisha Yearwood married Garth Brooks in 2005.

  • Garth has three daughters from a previous marriage.

  • Trisha revealed what it’s like to be a “bonus mom.”

Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks have become one of country music’s most beloved couples — but they haven’t always been together. Before the lovebirds got married in 2005, Garth was married to his college sweetheart, Sandy Mahl, with whom he had three daughters. As such, when Trisha and Garth tied the knot, Trisha wasn’t only committing to him but his daughters, too.

Having never had any kids of her own, Trisha opened up about the experience in an interview with SheKnows.

“When you don’t have children, you have the luxury of being selfish because it’s just about you,” she said in the interview. “You don’t have to think about somebody else first. And as an artist, it’s easy to be really egocentric because your job is to be thinking about your career, what you have to do next, how you’re going to take yourself to the next level. So to get out of that space and to realize that it doesn't matter what I have going on, it was a real lesson for me.”

Although it was a bit of a learning process when she first stepped in as a bonus mom to Allie, 25, August, 27, and Taylor, 29, nowadays, Trisha and the girls are closer than ever. “It was a gift that I received from Garth and the girls of having them in a life that I didn’t know I was missing,” she shared. “I can’t imagine my life without them.”

As for why she prefers the term “bonus mom” over “stepmom,” it all comes down to connotations.

“When I think stepmom, I think Cinderella, you know, so I always prefer bonus mom,” she said. “Jada Pinkett Smith told me years ago, she's like, ‘you’re a bonus mom, don't call yourself something else.’ So I've taken that and run with it.”
