A Triplex Penthouse in Downtown Aspen Has Hit the Market for $65 Million

It’s no secret that Aspen, Colorado, is a popular playground for the world’s rich and famous, particularly during the winter and especially with those who like to hit the slopes or just appreciate a stylish après-ski moment. On any given day in December, the downtown core is where you’re likely to come across Kevin Costner casually strolling about in a black cowboy hat, Mariah Carey shutting down the Gucci boutique, and The Real Housewife of Beverly Hills OG Kyle Richards chitchatting with Rihanna at the high-end western wear emporium Kemo Sabe.

Smack in the center of downtown, atop the Italian luxury fashion brand Brunello Cucinelli’s shop, is also where New York City-based power couple Billy and Julie Macklowe spent years creating a bespoke triplex penthouse that’s now come to market with a Rocky Mountain High asking price of $65 million. The penthouse is being offered turnkey with its furnishings.

The three-floor penthouse is perched atop the Brunello Cucinelli boutique.

The couple, who split their time between Aspen, New York City, and the Hamptons, purchased the three-floor residence in 2015 for $13.4 million. Forgoing the customary mountain chalet set on a scenic hillside that many opt for in Aspen, Julie, founder of The Macklowe, the first American single-malt whisky, told Colorado Homes & Lifestyles that she hates driving a car and prefers everything at her fingertips.

Not only are there spectacular, up-close views of Ajax, Red Mountain, Independence Pass, and Capitol Peak from every window and terrace of the downtown penthouse, but it’s also right around the corner from the Silver Queen Gondola, a short walk to The Snow Lodge, and just a few blocks to the see-and-be-seen hot spots J-Bar and White House Tavern. Indeed, no car is necessary here at any time of the year, though the penthouse does transfer with four assigned parking spots.

The mountain-view penthouse is offered with its sumptuous furnishings.

With the help of local designer Karen White, the Macklowes chucked out all outdated and cliché Alpine décor and installed a clean, white-walled envelope discreetly dressed up with premium finishes and designer fittings. Billy, a real estate developer (and an heir to a great real estate fortune), told CH&L, “We’re inspired by clean lines, form and function, and minimalism.”

Their efforts, which required craning much of the furniture and fittings up from the street, produced a sumptuous and casual, light-filled contemporary ski residence enlivened with adventurous colors, sumptuous fabrics, and bold artwork. The project was completed almost two years ago.

A private elevator services all three floors of the 4,900-square-foot home, which has a total of four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms. There are two guest suites on the lower floor, along with a media room, while a third guest suite shares the middle floor with an open-plan great room graced with a monumental stone fireplace and a sleek chef’s kitchen. A wall of glass in the great room slides open to a slim balcony that runs the full width of the building.

The primary bath features book matched slabs of marble.

The primary suite occupies the triplex’s top floor and offers a spacious walk-in closet and a marble bathroom with a window in the shower that photogenically frames the peak of Aspen Mountain.

A spacious mud room is convenient for stashing parkas and ski gear, while the penthouse’s numerous outdoor spaces were designed for year-round use. Outside of the primary suite is a 520-square-foot deck with an outdoor fireplace, and on top of the primary suite is another 500-and-something-square-foot roof deck, this one with an outdoor kitchen, a spa tub, and wraparound views.

According to listings held by Steven Shane at Compass, the top-level terrace is not only one of the highest in the downtown area, the penthouse is a real estate rarity in that Aspen no longer allows for penthouses to be developed in the downtown core.
