We tried Wendy's Pumpkin Spice Frosty. Is it better than a Pumpkin Pie Blizzard?

You can't get away from it.

It seems to start right about Aug. 1 when back-to-school sales start cropping up and children begin fretting about the prospect of homework.

It's pumpkin spice and it seems to have taken over as the flavor of fall.

To celebrate the flavor of the season, Wendy's has decided to toss its hat into the pumpkin spice ring with a pumpkin spice Frosty.

What is a Frosty?

The Frosty is a frozen dairy treat based on a frosted malt. Its origin, according to wendys.com, was to mix ice and vanilla and chocolate ice creams together to smooth out the taste of the chocolate. The treat was first concocted in 1969. Currently, Wendy's sells a chocolate and vanilla Frosty. They have special seasonal Frosties such as peppermint and strawberry.

Now, there's a pumpkin spice frosty.

How does the Pumpkin Spice Frosty taste?

At first glance, it looks like thick pumpkin pie filling, which is odd to see in a cup. After removing the lid, you get the scent of pumpkin spice. It's nice, but not overwhelming, sort of like a sunny early fall day.

On the first taste, the pumpkin spice flavor is a bit overwhelming – maybe too overwhelming. However, you need to power through. As your taste buds get used to the flavor, it becomes pleasant. It's smooth and rich. If you like pumpkin spice, this is a winner.

Pumpkin Spice Frosty vs. Pumpkin Pie Blizzard

It all depends on what you want in a dessert. The Frosty has a stronger and better pumpkin spice flavor and if that's important to you, you have your answer.

However, when eating the Frosty, there was the desire to have something more like graham cracker crust pieces or whipped cream with a dash of nutmeg. The Blizzard has all of that.

If you are looking for a pumpkin pie-type ice cream dessert, then the Blizzard is hands down the winner.
