I Tried This Trendy Sheet Mask & Juice Pairing, And My Skin's Never Been Softer

Somewhere, deep in the annals of momagers' How To Invent A Celebrity playbooks, or in some sacred Illuminati text, there must be a sign: Instagram yourself wearing a sheet mask. It's got to be wedged right between Thou Shall Only Snack On A "Handful Of Almonds" and Thou Shall Never Leave The McMansion Without Proper Contouring. It's hard to properly Insta-stalk your favorite stars without seeing them rock a flower crown filter while wearing a sheet mask these days. Or seeing them tweet about how they can't start the day without their green juice (but, like, they totally don't watch what they eat, okay?).

It only makes sense then, that Time New York's new pairing menu takes the self-care movement to its trendy extreme, offering guests six sheet mask options and a pressed juice to go with it. This is the hotel that lets you wear designer bathrobes - from the John Galliano-fronted Maison Margiela, no less - as you binge-watch Netflix from TVs tucked inside wall mirrors. Everything about the sleek, modern-meets-glam space seems custom-made for people seeking that luxe life.

It seemed like the perfect training ground to get my aspiring-D-Lister on. While the Soothe & Replenish Menu strikes on two major trends - searches for sheet masks have skyrocketed over the past few years, and pressed juice sales are expected to skyrocket from $492 million a year to $845 million by 2024 - the hotel's not just trying to strike while the fads are hot.

What It Is:

Given how many guests fly in from all over the world, they wanted to come up with a menu that'd relieve jet lag, explained guest services director Jack Marley. Sheet masks revive tired skin from the outside, while the vitamins in the juices perk you up without caffeine or added sugar. The brand worked with Korean beauty brand Peach & Lily, as well as Los Angeles-based Pressed Juicery, to come up with the pairings, though Marley's quick to mention you can mix and match, ordering whatever drinks and masks you'd like.

There's no exact process to the pairing; you down the juice and rock the mask whenever you want, and not necessarily together. After washing my face and putting on the slippery, cotton mask, I can attest it's much easier to drink first, mask later. Unless you're cool with constantly pressing the mask against your face while you sip. For 20 minutes.

What's On The Menu:

The hotel suggests sticking to one mask and juice per day, but my fervor for getting that Jessica Alba glow - she's reportedly a Pressed Juicery fan and has posted pics rocking eye and lip masks - I went one after another, quite literally tasting (and wearing) the rainbow.

Here's a breakdown of your options:

  • To revive dry skin: Hydrate mask + Greens 2 juice

  • To make your skin glow: Brighten mask + Greens 1 juice

  • To help you zen out: Calm mask + Roots 1 juice

  • To clear up breakouts: Clarify mask + Citrus 1 juice

  • To minimize pores: Shrink Pores mask + Citrus 3 juice

  • To tone and tighten skin: Firm mask + Roots 3 juice

What To Expect:

I started with the hotel's bestselling combo, Hydrate, followed by the Firm mask and Roots 3 juice. Both masks felt pretty similar - a little slimy, like putting seaweed on your face - though the Hydrate's bergamot oil had a fruitier scent to it. Both felt intensely hydrating, making my skin feel plump and soft afterward, though the vitamin D-loaded Firm mask did a better job of reducing redness (which makes sense, since the blueberry-pomegranate-honey-mushroom combo is meant to be anti-inflammatory).

The juices live up to their claims. There's no sugar added, and the ingredients are as easy to read as walking down the produce aisle of the grocery store. Both green juices are essentially a salad in a bottle, though I preferred Greens 2, since the apple added a little sweetness to offset the kale, spinach, romaine, and parsley in the drinks.

While the Roots drinks, with their magenta color, were the prettiest of the bunch, the beet flavor was a bit too earthy for my tastes. Citrus 3 - a mix of grapefruit and mint - is good for citrus lovers, while Citrus 1 - cucumber, pineapple, lemon, coconut water, and aloe vera - is a milder taste of the tropics.

The Verdict:

One day isn't enough to see lasting results, but it will leave your skin feeling smooth - my perpetually tired eyes were less achy, too - for hours afterward. It was a quick way to give my skin a boost, while sipping a lot more vitamins than I'd get from my typical morning cup of cold brew.

Each combo will set you back $25 if you order it at the hotel, though you could always order the masks and juices directly from the shops and DIY it at home. Just make sure to include that flower crown filter before posting.
