Your favorite college couple is making it official.

If you’re a serious fan of the summer months, you know that the space inside your cooler is precious. And when you’re at that summer barbecue, hanging at the beach, or boating at the lake (lucky you!), the last thing you want to do is worry about having enough space for a delicious drink while you relax. Enter the new collab between Jack Daniel's and Coca-Cola (aptly dubbed Jack Daniel's & Coca‑Cola RTD) that's here to make your summertime drinking effortless.

The ready-to-drink collaboration first hit shelves this past fall in Mexico and will continue to expand to other global markets within North America and Europe this year. Expect to see it on store shelves starting this week. And we've got all the details you need to know in our Jack Daniel's and Coca-Cola canned cocktail review!

What is the new Jack Daniel’s and Coke?

The new “RTD” (ready-to-drink) bevy, the company says, is inspired by popular "bar-calls"—a cocktail ordered with specific brand names. It comes at the perfect time of year too—just before the weather warms up—and it’s a convenient way to drink a bar favorite anywhere but the bar. The company says the drink, which is marrying two of the most well-recognized brands around, offers consumers the option of a classic Jack and Coke in a “consistent, convenient and portable format.”

Ordering a Jack Daniel's and cola actually dates way back to 1907, when Dr. Lyman Kelber of the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils was dispatched to the South. He stumbled upon a soda fountain located near a military base that was serving cola to soldiers who were mixing it with Jack. Dr. Kelber’s report was the first official mention of Jack & Cola.

What's the difference between ready-to-drink cans and mixed drinks?

The first major (and obvious) difference is the fact that you won’t have to do anything but open a can. No heavy glass bottle of Jack, no 12-pack rolling around, no glasses to wash. In fact, the only worry you’ll have is making sure your manicure stays intact as you crack open that sleek black can.

According to the Distilled Spirits Council, spirits-based RTD cocktails are a rapidly growing market, with consumers being drawn in by the convenience, taste and variety. You can essentially have a bar-like experience in the convenience of your own home. The other difference is price. If you’re buying a four-pack, the price comes out to about $3.25 per drink which is much lower than you’ll find at any bar (even at happy hour prices). The taste of the RTD cans is comparable to a mixed drink, given the proportions are mixed correctly.

What is in the Jack Daniel’s and Coke?

Much like the popular mixed drink at your local bar, the canned cocktail is a decent mixture of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey and Coca-Cola. The cans sport a 7% ABV and have no caffeine. Beginning in May, the company will also offer four packs of a version featuring Coca-Cola Zero-Sugar.

What does RTD Jack and Coke taste like?

Much like your nostalgic end-of-the-night drink in your bar-hopping college days (as one of my friends described a classic Jack and Coke), these cans are dead-on for the popular bar staple. I thought it was the perfect balance of sweet, sticky Coca-Cola paired with the oaky nuttiness of Jack Daniel's. It went down easy (almost too easy, in my opinion) and I opted to drink it both over ice and out of the can (because I’m classy like that).

If you want to elevate it a bit, a squeeze of lemon or lime pairs nicely too. Drink it within a decent time frame because, as with any fizzy drink, the longer it sits, the flatter it becomes. And give your bevy enough time to chill too since a room temp Jack and Coke screams "frat party." It has a high drinkability factor, if whiskey is your thing, and isn’t overly sweet or overly strong as far as pre-mixed drinks go.
