'I Tried Costco's Viral 4.5-Pound Peanut Butter Chocolate Cream Pie and It’s a Legit Slice of Heaven'

The nearly-five-pound pie is worth going to Costco on a Saturday for.

Walking into Costco is truly one of the greatest pleasures in life. High-end liquor dupes, unlimited samples, the legendary $1.50 hot dog and soda combo, and don’t even get me started on the rotisserie chicken. In case you needed one more reason to head to the warehouse giant, Costco has done it again, releasing a pie earlier this month that people on the internet are losing their minds over. And with good reason; it’s smooth, silky and downright delicious. It's also nearly five pounds, weighing in at 4.5 lbs to be exact. We're talking about Costco's peanut butter chocolate cream pie.

Even though Pi Day was on March 14, Costco released their peanut butter chocolate cream pie in stores the day before. Almost immediately, TikTokkers began scouring their local warehouse club for the peanut butter behemoth as word trickled out about the new Kirkland Signature dessert. Weighing in at 72 ounces and four-and-a-half pounds, I had to stop halfway to the register from the bakery department in the back and grab a berry box to nestle it in so I could carry my peanut butter baby safely to the self-checkout.

What is in the Costco peanut butter chocolate cream pie?

The peanut butter chocolate cream pie has your standard ingredients—whipped topping, butter, sugar, peanut butter, cream cheese, graham cracker and something called “liquid truffle” which sounds like something straight out of the game Candy Land. It’s a thick, layered, dreamy dessert that’s simple enough in its three layers, but complex and heavenly when all three hit your tastebuds at once. Like most commercially-produced baked goods, this one also has a long list of ingredients that some people like to stay away from. And at 540 calories and 41 grams of fat per serving, this isn’t an everyday indulgence. But it’s all about balance, right?

What does the Costco peanut butter chocolate cream pie taste like?

The base of this beauty is a buttery, crumbly graham cracker crust. It’s not too thin that it falls apart when you slice into it, but not so thick that it takes away from the filling. And the filling! Silky, creamy, fluffy peanut butter that tastes like the inside of a Reese’s Cup mixed with whipped cream. The texture is smooth, not at all grainy, and not heavy as some peanut butter desserts can be. The peanut butter mousse is topped with the liquid truffle chocolate filling, which is a bit sturdier than the peanut buttery middle. It’s a delicate balance of dark and milk chocolate and tastes exactly like the cream filling of E.L. Fudge cookies. It’s definitely sweet, but not tooth-achingly so. This is a pie that my Costco queen grandmother would have proudly served up at a holiday party, and everyone in my family would have been clamoring for the last slice.

How to find the Costco peanut butter chocolate cream pie

I nearly had a panic attack when I did a quick check around my Costco’s bakery department and didn’t see the pie. I knew it had been hard to procure since its release, but being in a major city, I was hoping I would find it easily. It wasn’t in with the cakes or cheesecakes, but rather in a standalone endcap case opposite the avocados. The 12 or so pies were proudly stacked up, waiting for their forever homes when I went midday on a Tuesday. With that being said, it may be easier to find during the week when the warehouse tends to be a bit quieter. Some TikTokers have reported that they inquire behind the bakery counter when they can’t find it and employees will spill the tea on when it’ll hit the shelves again.
