We Tried Burger King's Impossible Whopper, And Now We're Campaigning To Keep It Around For Good

Burger King's wildly popular Impossible Whopper, a plant-based patty modeled after its most iconic sandwich, has officially landed in stores nationwide. And after more than a few days of non-stop buzz, I knew it was time to give it a try for myself.

Now I've done the whole Impossible Burger taste test before. I'm no novice here, people. But let's get one thing straight, there's a difference between your run-of-the-mill cheeseburger and BK's signature sammie. For one, the menu classic, which has been around since 1957, is really f*cking big—it's stacked with a 1/4-pound of flame-grilled beef, tomatoes, mayo, ketchup, pickles, and sliced white onions on top a sesame seed bun.

The Impossible version is the same...except obviously the beef is substituted with 1/4 pound of plant-based protein from Impossible Foods.

I had mixed emotions as I headed out for a Whopper run. On one hand, fans have been raving over the limited-edition launch! Sales are through the roof! But the last time I ventured to BK on a work day was for the chain's tacos, and that definitely, um, didn't go as planned.

I ordered a few to-go burgers for my co-workers, some with cheese and some without, and headed back to Delish HQ for an official evaluation. And let me just tell you, Burger King has officially redeemed themselves for that whole taco debacle. I took bite after bite and had to do a quick double check on the receipt that I wasn't in fact eating meat. It tasted nearly identical to an OG Whopper.

My co-workers agreed, too, all swearing they would actually order it for themselves. "It was so good! Honestly very convincing as meat," one noted. "Def satisfies the fast food craving."

I've sung the praises of Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat before, and I'm doing it again. The flavor, texture, and look are all impressive. And while I detected a slight aftertaste to the patty, as one editor so aptly pointed out, "doesn't all fast food?"
